The manufacturing history of Murray stretches back to 1919 when it began producing spare parts for the car industry. It later became known as a manufacturer of low cost bicycles and the first Murray ride-on lawn mowers were being produced by the company in the late 1960s. An American company based during the post-War period in Brentwood, Tennessee, Murray was for a time in the eighties and nineties British owned and became one of the most popular ride-on brands in the UK.
Since 2005 Murray has been owned by American manufacturer Briggs & Stratton, the world's largest producer of air cooled four-stroke engines for outdoor power equipment. Briggs & Stratton has been established since 1908. It designs, manufactures and markets generators, pressure washers, snow throwers, lawn and garden powered equipment (riding and walk behind mowers, tillers, chipper-shredders, leaf blowers and vacuums) and related accessories worldwide.
